Terrain Building & Model Painting Day.

Posted: 26th January 2012 by Pierre in Events

Terrain Building & Model Painting Day.

You are all welcome to come join us at the W.A.R.S. Premises on Saturday 18th February from 9:00am for a day of Terrain Building and Model Painting Session.

We will build together a “shanty town” for modern/ SI-FI table-top games. Materials, props and tools will be provided.

You can also bring your own models to paint during the event. Feel free to bring your models and paint for a pleasant afternoon sharing painting tips and techniques. Ideally the models would be already undercoated so you can get down to business immediately.

The terrain will ultimately remain at the club for the enjoyment of all, however if you would like to “show off” your own terrain you are more than welcome to do so. The idea is to have a good time, share ideas and do something constructive together.

Even though the Club will provide the necessary raw materials, should you have any surplus materials you have been hoarding for a while and never got around to do anything with it, now is the time for sharing!

Hope to see many of you there and bring along all the creativity you possess!!

The Myth of the Muscle Bound Oaf With A Steel Club

Despite being staples of the Fantasy genre, swords and sword-fighting techniques are quite heavily misrepresented in most games and fictions. Don’t get me wrong, a simplification of just about everything is necessary in the interests of playability, narrative flow, general coolness and so forth. It only becomes a problem when people assume that narratives or game mechanics are based on realistic principles, and decide that they are, somehow, the facts. Read the rest of this entry »

(Barsaive Group Write up!)

How does a good rpg campaign begin? What ingredients must be there to make a roleplaying group and an enjoyable roleplaying session? Well, judging by the fun the roleplaying group I just joined had on the very first session I think that the latest rpg to start at W.A.R.S. has all the right ones!

It is said that Napoleon’s greatest weapon was the speed with which his infantry could march, and then fight.

We also know, or maybe not, that the greatest and most famous march of the Napoleonic Wars, was that of the British light brigade, en route to Talavera, covering 42 miles in 26 hours, plus a few more miles past Talavera.

The issue of powergaming is a recurring concern in the ambit of wargaming, and in particular in Warhammer or Warhammer 40k. For the purposes of this article, I will be referring to Warhammer, though it can be taken into consideration for every wargame.

USING THE GM SCREEN AS A SHIELD

A safer guide to good game-mastering

When I started this hobby ten years ago, I was a student in 6th form, which is to say that I pretty much had more free time than I really needed.

My stipend bought me White Wolf’s Werewolf series (2nd Edition) and I spent my free classes reading them, and my lessons scribbling adventures for the upcoming sessions.

Alas, such beatific distractions no longer exist. I work in publishing and the art of meeting deadlines has become a part of me like some parasitic symbiote, and thus most of my campaigns tend to have the material prepared rather late in the day. Most of the time its in a café an hour before session time.

Having been studying Military Science for some time now, I thought I might put fingers to keyboard to discuss some of the really basic concepts of military tactics and how they apply to our hobby.

This week I am going to start with the most basic principle of all: Mission.

LADY LUCK

This hot subject has been an object of debate among gamers for years on end, and is still going on.

How many of us are attributed the mark ‘Lucky Git’ or ‘miftuh’ as we say in our mother language; I have a few people in mind already!

Anyways it seems that some people are gifted with graced rolling and others not; some people are not liked by some shape of dice and liked by others; others are ‘cursed’ and others need anger management due to the whimsical and often random nature of the best part of our collective hobby; Dice Rolling.
